Saturday Post-7/6/13

As we end the week, transportation is still an issue.  Trucks still are heading to California for the high priced freight.  It has caused some challenge for Idaho and Washington shippers.

Potatoes:  Market is steady and increasing upward at a more moderate pace.  Consumers still remain tight but we have finished the 4th of July holiday so they might eas a bit next week.  Challenge is that more and more packing operations are closing for the season.  We expect supplies to remain tight until we get into new crop.  Speaking of  new crop, the high heat has broken slightly and we are in the upper 90’s with evening temperatures 60’s at night.  This allows the ground tempature to cool and tubers grow better.  The week of August 12th is expected startup in Idaho and July 20th for Washington.  We expect Wasington red potatoes to start about a week earlier.

Onions:  Weather is still on the warm side in both California and New Mexico.   Washington temperature has cooled and that is good for the winter over onions.  California and New Mexico are both done with winter over onions and the quality is good.  Onion market was a bit uneasy at the end of the week.  If temperatures and truck supply continue to be tight you may see some lower prices to match what customers need on a delivered basis.
