FRIDAY UPDATE-8/9/13

FRIDAY UPDATE-8/9/13

Well, it’s Friday.  It has been a busy week over all and there is much to  look forward to next week.

Potatoes:  Washington Potatoes-Expect the carton market to soften.  The new crop Norkota’s are getting bigger, which is normal, and consumers are getting harder come by.  We expect the cartons to got around the $16 range and consumers to stay the same.  Idaho Potatoes-Old crop Burbank’s will be finished by the end of next week.  New crop Norkota’s just got started and we expect market to stay high while we get more shippers available.  We expect prices to remain very high, Cartons are $22 and poly 10’s are $12, but that may change by the end of next week.  Red Potatoes are starting everywhere so price changes could start occurring daily.  Quality from Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon, Texas, and Minnasota appears to be excellent.

Onions:  New Mexico has about three weeks left and California has about five weeks or so.  Washington has started new crop and is now into either transplants or direct seed which is causing quality to improve.  Idaho/Oregon is just getting started.  Markets are steady and we don’t see great change for a week or so.  By then, New Mexico will be on the downhill slide and Idaho/Oregon will be in full production.  We should see some seasonal decreases until they get the onions in storage (mid-October).
